Friday which is usually a day to be lazy was when Gully Boy happened, a plan that was worth missing my afternoon nap.
So what is so special about this movie? Seems like the usual plot of a boy/girl in India coming to age and realising their passion. It is the usual plot and more than that. It is a movie that has been delivered with so much depth. Though a lot can’t be discussed without spoilers here and there, I will do my best to do justice.
Murad Sheikh (Ranveer Singh), an actor par excellence has lived in the shoes of a rapper under shade. His knack of choosing films has always been an interesting point of discussion to film critics. Be it Ram (Ram Leela), Varun Shrivatsav (Lootera), Alauddin Khilji(Padmaavat) or Kabir Mehra (Dil Dhadakne Do), they bring out the true actor in him and is often not seen in the modern era. Right from being spot on about the way on how boys should be taught to treat women to being strong about his own identity despite his upbringing, Murrad’s character was more than one could expect. The way he portrayed the rapper was as if he underwent a metamorphosis just for this movie.
Love, an element often integral in a story involving music was realistic and not too cheesy. Personally, their chemistry was something that I felt would be odd and out of place. They prove you wrong, like soulmates who were meant to cross paths. If you find something good in life, take it without question – a wise thing appropriate for the Valentine’s Day that just passed or any day for that matter.
Saffena Ali (Alia Bhatt) delivery was spot on in different aspects. Her method of acting has evolved since the time she took up Student of The Year. A badass women who knows when to act upon things that matter was what Saffena was all about. A modern women of substance can see herself through Alia’s character.
Music was meant to be a main aspect and it was more than brilliant. For a genre not often listened to, Rap will creep up on you soon after you listen to these tracks. Lyrics seem to capture the rawness of growing up and the background score made sure you don’t miss the music while the story moved.
The film was more than local music and love glances, it was about Dharavi – a slum in Mumbai that personifies more about a diverse country like ours. The people, the surroundings, a check on dreams to be dreamt.
Apna time aayega – your time will come, keeps ringing in our minds.
